Prospects and potentials of agri-tourism in northern New Mexico

The subject of agri-tourism brings up mixed feelings for me. On the one hand, the emphasis of tourism in northern New Mexico reminds me of the shift in land tenure and economy that has negatively impacted people with an ancestral connection to this land. On the other, I see agri-tourism as a means for locals to benefit from the traditions they may take for granted, while giving travelers an appreciation of local agriculture that can inform their perspective on what is possible.

New Mexico nonprofit organizations have until April 15 to apply for grants of up to $5,000 from Public Service Company of NM for energy saving and energy efficiency projects in communities served by PNM. The PNM Fund will award $250,000 for projects such as upgrades to buildings, the purchase of energy-efficient equipment and appliances, and for initiatives that conserve natural resources. After 5 years of careful planning, a new natural foods co-op has finally opened in Los Alamos. The beautiful new building housing the Los Alamos Cooperative Market is located near the East Gate entrance to the city. For a small to medium sized natural foods store, the co-op is amazingly well stocked with possibly the largest variety of organic produce and organic packaged foods in the state.
