Genoveva Chavez Community Center Photovoltaic Installation Begins

SANTA FE, NM – The City of Santa Fe has begun work to install parking structures with solar panels in the main parking lot located south of the GCCC building. The parking canopy structures will be erected in September, and in December the solar panels will be placed on the structures. Work will be completed by Jan. 31, 2015.

Solar panels will provide approximately 23% of the electrical needs for the GCCC. The power will be generated on-site rather than through PNM’s power plants. This will reduce CO2 production by 1,130 tons and water use by 410,000 gallons per year. The panels have a 25-year warranty and should continue to generate power for many years after that.

A portion of the main parking lot will be fenced for the contractor’s staging area and some parking will be intermittently blocked for the construction. Additional parking is available on the northwest side of the GCCC.

The new parking structures will provide shaded parking during the day and LED lighting at night.

Voters approved bond money for the project in 2011. The total cost of the project is approximately $2.3 million, and the contractor is Affordable Solar, Inc.
